The Year 2021 was the year of D2C brands. A whopping $1.4B was pumped into this category. We also saw the emergence of a lot of Tharasio-styled 'house of brands' like Globalbees, Upscalio, and Mensa to name a few. This 'house of brands' wave has successfully tried to consolidate the category and give decent exits to D2C founders.
Having talked about all the money pouring in for the 'D2C' brands we also need to address an important aspect. While these brands want to talk and transact directly with their consumers but the irony is that most of these brands are still dependent on marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart, Nykaa, and Myntra's of the world.

Along with the new insurgent brands we have also seen a rise in the marketplaces as well. These marketplaces are trying to build a layer of trust for these new brands who started with an intention to be direct to consumers. Good for the brands to leverage these platforms for an initial lift. But, in the longer term the basic idea of building a community of direct consumer is taking a back seat. How can we solve for this? How can we surpass these platforms to build trust for our brands. How can we make users buy from our own websites instead of these marketplaces. Half the effort these hustling brands put in is leveraged by such marketplaces to pump their growth.

Why would a person add your product to cart, when there are so many alternatives and legacy brands?
What can a new D2C brand do to build that trust? Assuming that you have to acquire a new customer who has not heard of your brand.
